Obstetric inertia: an obstacle to the prevention of prematurity

Am J Obstet Gynecol. 1988 Oct;159(4):796-9. doi: 10.1016/s0002-9378(88)80138-8.

Abstract

Traditional obstetric beliefs regarding diagnoses leading to premature birth constitute a significant barrier to successful clinical application of current knowledge about the pathophysiology of preterm delivery. Progress in reducing prematurity will be limited unless obstetricians assume a leadership role in changing attitudes about preterm birth among patients, providers, and society in general.
