Front Neurol Neurosci. 2012:30:34-7. doi: 10.1159/000333384. Epub 2012 Feb 14.

Abstract

Coma and other states of impaired consciousness are common in stroke patients. Sudden disturbance of consciousness can be the predominant clinical syndrome in the brainstem stroke, particularly in the case of basilar artery occlusion. Clinicians need to thoroughly investigate for the presence of stroke in patients with sudden disturbance of consciousness.
